Description

Mediterranean modernity by Fernand Pouillon

This apartment located on the Old Port, in front of one of the emblematic buildings built by architect Fernand Pouillon between 1947 and 1955, combines panoramic views and modern comfort.

The apartment deploys 52.1 m2 Loi Carrez, extended by a loggia of 9.5m 2.

The entrance distributes living spaces and night areas on both sides. Open and sunny, the living room and dining room of 30 m2 offer a panoramic view of the Old Port of Marseille and the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde.

The night area includes a bright room of 12 m2 with storage and a bathroom with toilet.

This property also has other storage spaces in the entrance and some of its original elements, such as terracotta boxes and wrought iron bread cones, adorning the loggia’s guardrail.

The apartment benefits from the dynamic environment of the Old Port, close to all amenities (shops, services) and means of transport (Metro M1, Tramways T2 & T3 and Bus).

It is a few minutes walk from the historic district of Panier and MUCEM, emblematic museum of the city, designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti. Marseille-Saint-Charles station is less than 15 minutes by metro.

La Reconstruction du Vieux-Port de Marseille

The buildings of the Old Port form a remarkable architectural ensemble, constitutive of the identity of Marseille.

This operation, headed by Fernand Pouillon, is part of a much larger program of reconstruction of the old port of Marseille after the Second World War. The area, largely demolished, is being modernized. Fernand Pouillon received the order for a set of apartment buildings in collaboration with André Devin, under the tutelage of Auguste Perret between 1949 and 1955.

The architecture has clean shapes all in length, energized by recessed terraces, giving the illusion of bow-windows. Supported by large arcades on the ground floor, the general structure is lightened, topped by a last floor set back to crown the building. Combined with the façade’s structure, the ironwork and the terracotta caisson ceilings of the arcades, loggias and roofs, these components give the whole its character.

Pouillon mobilizes traditional forms from his “Beaux-Arts” training: such as arcades, the use of blond cut stone from the Pont du Gard or the crowning on the top floor; it also offers a modern structure and techniques, characteristics of the post-war grand ensemble building.

The building “42 au 66 Quai du port” was awarded the 20th century heritage label in 2001, and the facades and roof have also been listed as historical monuments since 1993.

Fernand Pouillon

The architect and urban planner Fernand Pouillon (1912-1986) was one of the great builders of the period of post-war French Reconstruction, having designed 50,000 housing units as well as numerous public buildings and facilities. His achievements extend from Marseille to Aix-en-Provence, passing through the Paris region (residence of the park of Meudon-la-Forêt, 1957; set of Point du Jour in Boulogne-Billancourt, 1959-1963), Algeria and Iran.

His work is distinguished by a harmonious integration with the site, rigorous proportions, and the use of noble materials. Pouillon also appreciated the collaboration with sculptors, ceramists and landscape artists. In his approach, he combined stone, wood and ceramics with concrete, metal and glass, confronting modern lines to vernacular inspirations, while taking into account the culture and customs of the inhabitants.
