Description

A studio in the Tours Erard

Located in one of the three Erard Towers, built in 1969 by architects Roger Anger, Mario Heymann, and Pierre Puccinelli and labeled Architecture Contemporaine Remarquable, this apartment offers bright spaces and an unobstructed view.

On a high floor, this studio develops an area of 31.11 m2 LC, extended by 17 m2 loggia.

The living room with open kitchen enjoys a double exposure and opens generously onto a green outdoor area.

An entrance, a bathroom with toilet and plenty of storage complete the whole.

A vertical village

First project led by Mario Heymann within the agency of Roger Anger and Pierre Puccinelli, the Erard towers offer a dynamic alternative to the model of the modern building – monumental, uniform and austere, aiming for an architecture on a human scale. Originally, these three distinct towers are connected by a network of outdoor walkways and hanging green spaces.

They were designed as a stack of individual houses on top of each other, highlighted by the steps and geometric volumes in facade, alternating protruding balconies and façade setbacks, according to a logic of vertical village. Quality housing, on a human scale in an urban context, was the ambition of the project that the architects summarized as follows: “We wanted that, from the street, a resident could immediately designate his apartment, without having to count the floors and windows.”

Roger Anger

Facades punctuated by a discontinuous geometry for his Parisian buildings, curved volumes in his urban utopias… The architecture of Roger Anger (1923-2008), original and unclassifiable, is inspired by kinetic art to model space as a sculptural whole. These artistic correspondences explain his sensitivity for the decorative and plastic arts, where each project becomes a work in its own right.

Roger Anger graduated from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1947 and cut his teeth at Paul-Jacques Grillo’s studio before founding his own agency in 1953, where he mainly handled design and interior decoration commissions. He surrounded himself with the architects Pierre Puccinelli, his main collaborator, Michel Loyer, Liliane Véder and Mario Heymann with whom he signed the iconic 28-storey towers in Grenoble, the “tallest housing buildings in Europe” at the time, awarded the First International Prize for Architecture of Belgium in 1967. Roger Anger also collaborates with visual artists from the collective L’Oeuf, Centre d’études, who work on a small scale in his buildings and create decorative ceramic elements.

A major figure in 20th century architecture, the richness of his career led him to conceive audacious achievements, such as the utopian community of Auroville in India, where he was able to fully express his humanistic and poetic vision of habitat. In Paris, he also built several buildings, putting into practice the originality of his aesthetic research and his innovative approach to urban space.
