Description

An artist’s studio transformed into a family home in Aubervilliers

This generously proportioned house has been converted from a 1970s garage into a workshop by architect Xavier Bernard in 2012.

It offers 174 m² of living space over two levels, and benefits from a sunny 40 m² west-facing terrace.

The ground floor comprises a huge floor area of around 100 m² with 6 metre-high ceilings and a beautiful living area comprising a lounge-dining room and an open-plan kitchen, extending out onto the terrace. A study opening onto the terrace and a bathroom complete this level. Upstairs is the sleeping area with three bedrooms and a second bathroom with a large jetted bathtub. The house also includes a 10 m² cellar.

A dual heating and cooling system using a heat pump and an underfloor heating system guarantees comfort in summer and winter at a lower cost.

The floor is covered in brick-red waxed concrete on the ground floor and solid parquet on the first floor, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Long shelves, currently used as bookcases, have been cleverly placed between the beams supporting the mezzanine floor. Upstairs, old window frames have been used to create windows overlooking the main volume. Each bedroom has a skylight.

The complex offers the charm of a detached house, combining industrial aesthetics with its exposed structure and exoticism with its bright red façade and yellow perimeter wall.

The house is located in a quiet residential area, close to the Monfort market, 6/7 minutes’ walk from the Fort d’Aubervilliers metro line 7, and 15 minutes from the future Mairie d’Aubervilliers station on line 12. These two stations will also be served by the future line 15 of the Grand Paris. Gare de l’Est is 15 minutes away by public transport and Parc de la Villette is 15 minutes away by bicycle.

Aubervilliers, a target municipality for the Greater Paris region, will host the aquatic centre for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Industrial spirit

The façade of the house is reminiscent of its industrial history, with its characteristic cut-out originally intended to house the garage sign. Repainted in bright red, it now looks like a sunny hacienda, reminiscent of Latin American modernism.

The identity of the site was enhanced by the work of architect Xavier Bernard when it was first transformed into an artist’s studio and exhibition space in 2012. The building’s metal structure was stripped bare, painted black and left exposed to make the most of the available volume. The use of wood on the ceiling and in the construction of the upper floor warms up the whole while maintaining a refined aesthetic.

The current owners have converted the first floor to create two additional bedrooms and storage space.
