Description

An architect-designed house surrounded by nature in Burgundy

This family home comprises a local stone barn and a lean-to building with modernist lines, added to the ensemble in 1964.

Set in 1,113 m² of wooded grounds, it offers 170 m² of living space over two levels.

The ground floor, converted from the lean-to, includes a living room that opens onto the garden through a glass wall, a fireplace area with masonry bench seating and parquet inlay, a kitchen-dining room, a vast workshop area, 3 bedrooms and a bathroom. A storeroom with wine cellar, a machine room, a boiler room and a garage complete this level.

The attic offers a large workshop space, converted into a raised bedroom area and a library. A second bathroom was planned for the ground floor (project available).

The living room opens onto a pleasant garden with terraces, while the workshop opens onto a courtyard with garden, well-kept vegetable patch, stable and wood shed.

The attic and workshop offer numerous possibilities for extension. The ground floor workshop could also be used as a guest room or office space, thanks to its independent access.

Refreshment required.

A place where people can live together and create

The living spaces have a warm, inviting atmosphere, where modernity is expressed in the raw materials left exposed and the fluidity of the volumes. Rough-cast concrete beams and pillars sit alongside naturally grained wood veneers on the sloping ceiling, local stone on the walls of the old barn and red terracotta floor tiles. The bedrooms face east to catch the sunrise, and the attic has retained its impressive original timber frame. Skylights in the roof let in natural light.

The stone-paved workshop in the barn provides a calm space in which to create.

Timeless architecture

An extension of the existing barn, the architecture of this house is characterised by its simplicity, the elegance of its design and the ingenuity of its programme. Its large, protective roof, covered in tiles identical to those on the surrounding buildings, is an extension of the barn to which it backs onto, blending in perfectly with its rural surroundings while offering a high level of living comfort. The large openings with wooden frames and the dialogue between traditional and technical materials create a timeless work that evokes both the achievements of critical Regionalism and some of the creations of the contemporary architectural scene, with their minimalist implementation.
