Description

An artist’s house in Brittany

Located in Brest, this detached 205 sqm house has been creatively renovated by its current owner, who is an architect, visual artist and craftsman.

Spread over four levels, the open-plan floors offer generous, light and airy volumes. The principle of the house is to place the main living space on the second floor, to take advantage of the sunshine and uninterrupted views over the harbour.

The first floor comprises three bedrooms and a large 67 sqm work area. On the 2nd floor, the living area, kitchen and bathroom are bathed in light from the atrium and offer panoramic views of the sky and ocean. A 12 sqm mezzanine in the roof of the house can be used as an office or guest bedroom, as required. On the ground floor, the artist’s current 70 sqm studio opens onto a beautiful garden planted with trees. It can easily be transformed into a living space, as it has a summer kitchen and toilet.

A house – an object of creation

An architect’s vision, this house is as much a work of craftsmanship as it is a work of art, through the attention paid to the materials, the colour scheme and the presence of works of art (sculptures, frescoes) scattered around or integrated into the architecture itself. A work that has never compromised on its habitability.

An ecological bias

The renovation of the house was guided by a demanding, eco-responsible vision:

A number of original features have been salvaged and preserved. To optimise thermal comfort and ventilation, the layout of the rooms has been rethought in relation to the indoor climate and orientation, in line with the principles of bioclimatism.

All the window frames have been replaced with double glazing. The entire roof slope was insulated with wood wool. For the mezzanine, the architect opted for interior wood cladding in French fir and solid oak flooring.

The walls are mainly painted with lime and casein paints.

Between city and ocean

The house is located in the western part of Brest, in the Saint-Pierre Quilbignon district, which looks like a small village with its old town centre and local shops.

The sea can be reached on foot or by bike in around ten minutes. All the other beaches to the west, as far as Le Conquet, are within easy reach in less than half an hour.

Close to all shops, public transport (bus and tram), primary schools, secondary schools and doctors.

The lucky owners will be able to experience the sea and the countryside to the full while living in a dynamic metropolis.
