Description

A modernist duplex with sea wiews

This penthouse apartment is located in a building designed by architect Jean Aubert, constructed in 1970. Originally the architect’s family home, it offers outdoor spaces and panoramic views over the port of Mourillon, La Seyne-sur-Mer, and Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer.

Occupying the top two floors of the building, this through duplex spans 99 m² and features both a balcony and a terrace.

The first level is organized around the entrance hall, which serves the reception areas. These include a double-height living room, a dining room connected to a semi-open fitted kitchen. These spaces are bright and open, thanks to a 9 m² running balcony.

This floor also includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, separate toilets, and closets.

The master suite on the upper level features a bathroom with double vanity, bathtub, and separate toilet, as well as a dressing room. The void above the living room, the large windows in the bedroom, and the terrace provide abundant natural light.

This level offers generous outdoor spaces, allowing you to enjoy the panoramic views year-round: a 25 m² terrace with a planter and built-in fireplace, as well as a conservatory. A solarium is also accessible on the roof terrace, offering 380° views of the sea.

The property also includes a cellar and two parking spaces within the building.

Located in the sought-after La Mitre district, the apartment benefits from a lively yet peaceful, village-like atmosphere. It has all amenities (markets, shops, transport, and green spaces) and is just a short distance from Mourillon and its beaches.

Le Pradet is a 15-minute drive away, Toulon-Hyères Airport is 30 minutes away, and Marseille is 1 hour away by car.

Domestic architecture and sensitive design

Designed in 1970, this duplex holds a unique place in the work of architect Jean Aubert, who envisioned it as an author’s apartment, tailored for his own family. His signature is evident in the way he harnesses light, quality of living, and the connection to the outdoors. The bold lines and assertive forms of his architecture are imbued with great sensitivity.

The architect designed a clear and legible floor plan and volumes. He prioritized comfort through ample air, light, and transparency, achieved via numerous openings, glass doors, transom windows, and a conservatory. This approach is also reflected in the diversity of spaces: a double-height living room, a conservatory acting as a transitional space, and a terrace. Such a variety of spaces, rare in urban settings, fully attests to the architect’s vision.

Aubert designed every detail of the spaces. He highlighted the openings with dark wood that contrasts with the white façade and walls. This wood matches the staircase elements, such as the steps and handrail. The apartment still retains many original features, including the tiling and the 1970s-style fitted kitchen with its Formica furniture.

Jean Aubert

Born in 1926 and passed away in 2005, Jean Aubert studied in Paris at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (Pontremoli Leconte studio). In 1956, after graduating, he moved to Le Lavandou and partnered with André Lefèvre-Devaux, whom he met during his studies.

Their collaboration gave rise to a new constructive approach: “the architecture of disappearance,” a response to the urbanization of Var, marked by the neo-Provençal model. This theory involved creating an architectural model that combined contemporary living with respect for natural spaces. Notable examples of this philosophy include the Gaou Bénat housing development and the Fourches village. Their partnership ended in 1980.

Aubert notably served as the architect for the city of Valenciennes before moving to Toulon, where he partnered with Ampollini and his son Gilles Aubert. Together, they completed numerous private projects, including villas and clinics.
