Organised by the Association Eileen Gray. Etoile de mer. Le Corbusier and the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, in partnership with the Fonds de Dotation Quartus pour l’Architecture, this exhibition pays tribute to the characteristic atmosphere of the seaside and its architecture.
It can be seen until 3 November 2024 at the Hangar Cap Moderne in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.
From Marseilles to Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, the exhibition curators Milena Charbit and the Concorde agency have travelled the coastal road along the Mediterranean, looking at its modern icons, from the Medina of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde in La Ciotat to the village of Le Merlier in Ramatuelle, via Les Sablettes in La Seyne-sur-Mer, Les Katikias in Bandol and Le Gaou Bénat in Bormes-les-Mimosas.
They have also documented the informal and often seasonal architecture, campsites and beach bars, with the aim of drawing up an inventory of seaside buildings in all their forms and uses. Often situational, these buildings are the result of the needs and uses of their inhabitants: offering shade and a place to rest, preserving the view and being discreet in the landscape, being easy to install…

This new body of work stands out for its special relationship with nature and the elements. The simplicity of the modern structure and its minimalist lines evoke a search for formal and spatial freedom, reflecting the imagination of a timeless summer truce, far from the frenzy of everyday life.
The sensible approach proposed by the Concorde architecture and urban planning agency and the architect and researcher Milena Charbit does not aim to be exhaustive, but rather to show an art of living, born of an atmosphere. Like a travel album, the exhibition features a selection of photographs, postcards, light models and texts by authors on the theme of the ‘seaside’.
