As part of the 2026 National Architecture Days, Villa Barbéris, a partner of our agency, will host the exhibition L’Atelier des modernes : Barbéris Joinery and the Modernist Movement, 1950–1980, from October 16 to November 22. The exhibition traces its history through its architectural heritage, industrial legacy and artistic significance.

Drawing on the Barbéris archival collection, photographs, construction documents, correspondence, plans and personal accounts, this exhibition explores the history of a workshop that played an active role in the major transformations of architectural design throughout the 20th century, from the aftermath of the Second World War through the Reconstruction period to the oil crisis of the 1970s.

It also sheds light on the collaborative networks that developed around the workshops in Ajaccio and Villeneuve-Loubet. Architects, artists, engineers, craftspeople and workers, including Guy Rottier, Le Corbusier, André Wogenscky, Charlotte Perriand and André Bruyère, worked together to shape a vision of modernity that was fundamentally collective.

Villa Barbéris

Located near the seaside resort of Marina Baie des Anges, between the Mediterranean Sea and Vaugrenier Departmental Park, Villa Barbéris has been awarded the “20th-Century Heritage” label since 2006. Designed by architect Guy Rottier in the early 1960s, the villa was commissioned by entrepreneur Charles Barbéris as a family home. The two men had met a few years earlier while working together on the construction of the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille, alongside Le Corbusier.

Guy Rottier designed the villa under Le Corbusier’s guidance, regularly submitting his plans for the master’s review. His influence is evident in the horizontal ribbon windows and the roof terrace, while the arrangement of columns, replacing Le Corbusier’s iconic pilotis, and the strikingly bold projections of the façade reveal Rottier’s more personal architectural language.
