Description

A Californian-inspired haven for an art collector

Designed by Alexander Krikhaar between 1992 and 1994 for his father, Dutch artist and gallerist Herman Krikhaar (1930-2010), this panoramic villa with its light, white silhouette evokes the constructions of the U.S. West Coast.

Set within a landscaped 1.7-hectare plot dotted with grottos and planted with Mediterranean species, the house offers a total floor area of 609.5 m², of which approximately 500 m² is primarily on one level. Access to the property is via a vast circular driveway, at the center of which lies a shaded pétanque court, ensuring smooth circulation.

The villa opens onto a large reception area of over 150 m², fully glazed and facing a southeast terrace with panoramic views. The space is organized around a sculptural fireplace made of dark green Brazilian granite and extends into a fully equipped kitchen with a central island, a dining area that continues outdoors beyond a glass wall, an open space serving as an office, and large library areas. On the upper floor, a 70 m² studio capable of accommodating large canvases benefits from manually adjustable natural lighting. Accessed via a cantilevered concrete staircase, the same landing leads to a rooftop terrace arranged as a solarium.

The villa includes three suites in the main section and two more located in the annex, which is accessible from the house. The master suite, facing due east, offers an unobstructed view of the mountain range where the sun rises and enjoys direct access to the terrace.

Designed to showcase a rich selection of the client’s art collection, this villa features an 80 m² exhibition gallery bathed in light from a skylight. The fully glazed corridors, where the wall offsets provide ample display space for artworks, extend the exhibition area toward the terrace. The terrace cascades down to an infinity pool with a fountain and offers a breathtaking panorama of the garden and the surrounding hills.

Adjacent to the villa, an 80 m² guest house with an independent terrace, living room, kitchen, two bedrooms, and a bathroom provides an ideal space for hosting guests.

The property is completed by a three-car garage, a laundry room, and, in the basement, a cellar with technical rooms. Several parking spaces are available in front of the house.

By the pool, the bronze sculpture L’Amazone, created by Arthur Spronken in 1973, is available for purchase in addition to the asking price.

Located in the heart of the Green Provence in a preserved natural environment, the villa is just a 4-minute drive from the shops and amenities of Salernes, 30 minutes from Draguignan, and 1.5 hours from the airports of Marseille and Nice.
The birthplace of terracotta tiles, Salernes is also renowned for its rich ceramic tradition, highlighted by a contemporary museum designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. The town is surrounded by remarkable medieval villages such as Villecroze, Entrecasteaux, and Cotignac, and the Verdon Gorges on Lake Sainte-Croix are a 40-minute drive away.

Constructive Rationality and Site Integration

The villa perfectly fits into the natural topography of the site. Its horizontal silhouette, marked by a regular grid of metal columns supporting a concrete frame, along with the extensive use of glass, echoes the legacy of Mies van der Rohe, seeking purity, constructive rationality, and spatial continuity. This reference continues in the choice of materials and the particular attention to detail in the house’s layout: the modular plan thanks to sliding panels offering great flexibility of use, the glass blocks in the bathrooms, the Roman travertine laid in square modules extending seamlessly to the terraces.

The site itself contributes to the spatial experience: to the north, a cliff overlooks the house and protects it from the Mistral wind, while to the south, the view opens widely onto the valley, gently descending toward an ancient olive grove. The property’s boundaries, drawn by steep ravines, serve as natural borders, absorbed into the overall composition.

Nature and Synthesis of the Arts

Conceived as both a family home and a showcase for art, Le Cygne offers open, light-filled volumes where interior and exterior dialogue in perfect continuity. Each space is part of a quest for overall harmony where areas flow seamlessly. The spacious living area, directly connected to the ever-present landscape, interacts with the exhibition spaces. A light well illuminates the gallery section, cleverly avoiding crossed shadows. Throughout, art infuses the place, between sun and shade, concrete and water, in a poetic composition that offers an aesthetic experience to inhabit.
