Description

Mid-Century apartment right on the waterfront of the Arcachon Bay

Overlooking the Arcachon Bay from the La Vigne dune, this residence built by Francis Lafont is a rare example of 1970s architecture on the Cap Ferret peninsula.

This apartment offers a 94.5 m² LC living area spread over three levels oriented East-West.

The middle level features an entrance leading to a bright living space overlooking the park and the seascape. It includes a dining area, a semi-open kitchen, and a double-height living room with a fireplace, fully glazed towards the Bay and opening onto a long terrace above the water that benefits from morning light. A laundry room completes this level.

A staircase leads down to the sleeping area on the lower level, consisting of two bedrooms with panoramic views of a pine landscape, and a bathroom.

On the upper floor, a floating mezzanine houses a master bedroom with an en-suite shower room and spectacular cross views: the Bay on one side, the forest on the other.

Two parking spaces and a cellar complete the property.

Designed like a hamlet perched in the pines, the residence is set in a private park of more than four hectares, featuring a swimming pool, two tennis courts, and direct access to the Bay’s beaches.

With boat mooring rings available at the foot of the residence, the location offers a maritime and contemplative lifestyle, just a few minutes’ walk from the Ferret market and the shops of La Vigne.

Living the panorama

The apartment is located in the most secluded building of the residence, benefiting from absolute tranquility and an unobstructed view of the ever-changing tidal mirror and the Île aux Oiseaux on the horizon. Access is not through an impersonal lobby but via an open-air walkway immersed in the pine forest, almost like in an elevated house. It combines the comfort of a house—thanks to its multiple levels and generous volumes—with the practicality of an apartment: easy maintenance, security, and an on-site caretaker.

The spirit of the 1970s remains evident here, in the harmonious proportions, the fluid circulation, and the subtle way it captures light at every hour of the day. Large glass windows, white walls, and minimalist architecture let the landscape take center stage.

A remarkable residence on the Bassin waterfront

The overall design of the residence expresses a harmonious aesthetic, where modernism integrates local forms. Its architect, Francis Lafont, aimed to give the entire building a pointed volume that, when viewed from the bay, resembles the sloping roofs of a large villa. The architecture is conceived to inhabit the landscape rather than impose upon it.

On the facade, the orthogonal grid of balconies and openings interacts with the slanting lines of the roofs, drawing from a vernacular architectural language. The interplay of volumes is emphasized by the choice of materials: the massiveness of the white rendered concrete, typical of the seventies, is balanced by the transparency of glass and the elegance of wooden cladding. The whole structure rests on an elevated base that lets light flow underneath, supported by stilts housing cellars and common areas.
