Description

An ecological house in northern Brittany

Just a stone’s throw from the sea and beaches, this house was designed in 2006 by architect and photographer Alexandre Tabaste. Guided by a commitment to minimal environmental impact, the 2024 renovation delivers a sensitive and minimalist project that cultivates a gentle way of living.

This single-story home offers a living area of 115 m² within a landscaped 970 m² plot. It features a large living space with a fully equipped solid wood kitchen open to the living room. Thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows on one side and transom windows over 6 meters high on the other, the living spaces are continuously bathed in natural light.

The night area includes three bedrooms opening onto the garden: a parental suite with a shower room, two other bedrooms (one with a mezzanine providing additional sleeping space), a bathroom, and a toilet.

Facing due south, the house overlooks a landscaped garden dotted with rocks typical of Northern Finistère, which were preserved during the site’s development. A wooden terrace, partially shaded by the roof overhang, allows you to enjoy the outdoors while protecting the interior from direct summer sunlight.

A garage completes the property.

Some of the modernist furniture, signed by renowned architects, is also available for purchase.

The property enjoys a privileged geographical location just a few minutes’ walk from the beaches. The town center of Plouescat, with its shops and amenities, is a 5-minute drive away.

Northern Finistère is an exceptional natural area, known for its wild coastline traversed by the GR34 hiking trail and its turquoise waters, home to numerous surfing spots.

The city of Brest, including its airport and train station, is a 40-minute drive away, and Roscoff train station is 30 minutes away.

Wood as a narrative framework

Driven by the desire to reduce the energy impact of architecture, Alexandre Tabaste has created a project that is both sustainable and minimalist. Within this plot dotted with Armorican trees and monoliths resembling menhirs, the wooden house rises in sobriety. Its gentle single-pitch zinc roof and Douglas fir cladding harmoniously integrate the building into its environment.

The setback of the façade under a generous roof overhang subtly conceals the large glazed surfaces and contributes to the overall harmony of the ensemble. This overhang also creates a vast covered terrace protected from sea winds. It shields the living room from direct summer sunlight while allowing winter sun rays to generously flood the living spaces.

Inside, the omnipresence of pine creates a sense of continuity with the house’s exterior. The layout is guided by the architect’s personality, nourished both by childhood memories of a house in Corsica and by his passion for 20th-century architecture and design. Subtle references include woodwork inspired by Charlotte Perriand’s chalet in Méribel, while the world of American artist and architect George Nakashima infuses the choice of certain details and materials, such as latticework, paneling, tomette tiles, and zellige.

Alexandre Tabaste : between art and architecture
