Description

A contemporary villa in the gulf of Morbihan

Designed in 2018 by architect Fabienne Costel, this remarkable home offers all the qualities of a family residence in an exceptional natural setting.

In 2019, the house was selected for the Archinovo Prize and won the CAUE du Morbihan award in the new house category.

At the heart of a 667 m² plot planted with majestic maritime pines, the home spans 210 m² across two modules connected at ground level by a terrace and upstairs by a walkway nestled among the trees.

The main house, spread over two levels, features a large glazed volume on the garden level, including a fully equipped kitchen open to a dining area and a living room centered around a Focus fireplace (installed in 2024). This area is complemented by a laundry room and separate toilet, concealed behind a wooden partition.

The upper floor houses the sleeping area : a master suite with a shower room, two additional bedrooms (one with a sea view), a bathroom with separate toilet, and a study or TV lounge that leads to a walkway connected to the second module.

Numerous openings, bay windows, and skylights provide this home with an exceptional diversity of views over the sea, pines, and sky.

The second module spans 63 m². The ground floor is designed as a bright living space, featuring a fully equipped kitchen with a living-dining area and a toilet. The upper floor includes two bedrooms and a shower room.

The house is surrounded by a large elevated wooden terrace.

Located in the heart of the Parc naturel régional du golfe du Morbihan, the villa enjoys an exceptional and highly sought-after location : a 5-minute walk from the sea (Tour Vincent), 10 minutes from the beach on foot, and halfway between the port and the village of Arradon (which offers many amenities, schools, and shops). It is connected to the center of Vannes by bus (15 minutes).

The desirable commune of Arradon, located at the gates of Vannes, offers numerous nautical activities (sailing school, kayaking, etc.) and tourist attractions (hiking, ferry terminals to the islands of the gulf).

Weaving architecture into the folds of the Breton landscape

Guided by a quest for integration with the landscape and respect for the site in all its dimensions, this “treehouse” is a celebration of the connections between architecture, nature, and domestic life.

For Fabienne Costel, the site itself had to inspire and dictate the project. The pine forest became a structuring constraint, determining the placement of the two living modules, erected like mineral boxes cantilevered on glass bases and connected by a walkway.

To avoid disturbing the growth of the pine roots, the architect chose to minimize the ground footprint : the garden level, largely glazed, is elevated above the ground and set back from the upper floor. The latter is treated as a large monolithic volume, resting on a self-supporting concrete structure, ensuring optimal solar exposure while protecting the terrace from the elements. It is clad in schist, whose shades blend harmoniously with the local landscape, reinterpreting the vernacular codes of Breton longères.

Inside, the central void and the interplay of lateral and zenithal openings allow natural light, and its characteristic Morbihan variations, to be integrated as a living material, shaping daily domestic life and its uses.

Recognized as a remarkable work, this house was featured on the cover of Architectures à Vivre magazine in 2019 and received the 1st prize from the CAUE du Morbihan in the new house category (2019).

Fabienne Costel

After many years practicing in Paris at her agency CK architectures, Fabienne Costel (b. 1970) continued her career in Brittany by founding FABIENNE COSTEL ARCHITECTE in Arradon. The agency develops individual and collective housing projects, facilities, and urban studies for private clients and developers. Her approach is contextual and sustainable, attentive to climate issues, the transformation of existing structures, and the quality of Breton living environments.

While the architect claims several influences that guide her creative work (Brazilian modernism, the works of Peter Zumthor), her projects have been distinguished by numerous awards, including a double selection for the Archinovo Prize in 2015 and 2019, a 1st prize from the CAUE du Morbihan in the new house category (2019), and a selection among the top ten for the PAEB Prize 2020 in the “Living” category.
