On March 15, 2023 at the Volume bookshop, Christelle Lecoeur and Cyril Brulé present the new title in the “Lieux d’architecture” collection published by Bernard Chauveau: La Villa Sayer. Marcel Breuer à Glanville, dedicated to the only French project by Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer, built in 1972 in Normandy.

In 1972, Babette and Louis Sayer commissioned Marcel Breuer to build their home in Normandy, near Deauville: a unique adventure, atypical for a couple of their background, which resulted in a feat as technical as it was poetic, realized jointly by the architect’s American and French offices, under the direction of Mario Jossa.

This second home will remain the only house built in France by the Bauhaus architect, who emigrated to the United States in the 1930s. Nestled into the slope, beneath a bold veil of white concrete, it was the adaptation of an American style for French family life. In addition to this residence, we’ll be looking back at the long career of Marcel Breuer, best known for his tubular steel chairs, but also the designer of dozens of public buildings in the U.S. and Europe, including the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the Flaine ski resort, and just as many remarkable homes.

The launch party will take place on March 15, 2023 from 7:30 p.m. at the Volume bookshop, 47, rue Notre-Dame de Nazareth in the 3rd arrondissement.

The “Lieux d’architecture” collection presents architectural projects that are rich in meaning and history. Each book presents a work in its entirety, showing the context of the meeting of a style and a particular territory, of a master builder and his architect. Each book is meticulously researched, with particular attention paid to the gestation of the project, the description of the creative process, and the exchanges between client and designer, so as to present the houses in all their identity.
