A turn-of-the-century holiday estate on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest

Situated in the clearing of a forest park, this 1920s villa enjoys an exceptional living environment on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, in the village of Barbizon. This villa is the subject of a renovation project designed by the Ciguë agency, offering a host of development possibilities: division into several private flats, creation of a co-living and co-working space, use as a bed and breakfast, an agency for the self-employed, etc.

Nestled in a lush setting, this villa offers a living space turned towards nature, with the cachet and spatial generosity of the great holiday homes of the early 20th century. Set in 2.5 hectares of woodland, it spans 600 sq.m of living space, with a further 150 sq.m of convertible basement and 5,800 sq.m of private gardens.

The garden level features a large entrance hall leading to a beautiful reception area of almost 100 sq.m bathed in natural light thanks to a skylight and side openings. An adjoining lounge of around 40 sq.m provides another pleasant living area opening onto the outside. A large separate kitchen opens onto a terrace shaded by a pergola and completes the living spaces. This level also includes a large 25 sq.m suite with en suite shower room, the walls of which are paved with mosaics featuring dreamlike motifs.

One of the strengths of this house is its large sleeping area, comprising 9 bedrooms. The first floor has 6 bedrooms and 3 shower rooms, and benefits from a 90 m² terrace offering unparalleled views of the park’s century-old trees. The second floor includes a bedroom and a 50 sq.m games room under an exposed timber frame as well as an adjoining attic. Part of the night space can easily be converted into an office, library or music room.

There is also a garage and a large basement that could be converted. The latter houses two cellars, including a wine cellar, a boiler room, two workshops and a laundry room.

The property benefits from unspoilt natural surroundings and an exceptional location on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, in the village of Barbizon, a major centre of French artistic history.

The park and villa, accessed via a long driveway lined with plane trees, are close to all the amenities of the village: shops, school, chemist, doctor, post office, leisure facilities, etc. 15 minutes on foot, 5 minutes by bike or 4 minutes by car. Paris is less than 50 minutes away by car or train.

An eclectic setting in the heart of nature

The villa’s decorative vocabulary is part of an eclectic approach popular in holiday estates at the turn of the last century. It borrows from neoclassicism, neo-regionalism and the various avant-gardes of the period: Art Deco-inspired details, windows with lines reminiscent of Art Nouveau, worked earthenware, etc.

Its interior spaces retain a traditional layout. The centrepiece of the villa, the large living room on the garden level, with its travertine stone floor, embodies the principle of synthesising the arts, notably with its curved, integrated planters. In addition, the omnipresence of nature is remarkable thanks to the many windows overlooking the forest.

La Lisière, an innovative housing project in Impressionist lands

This villa is part of the forest estate that in 2024 will be home to the “La Lisière” project, a top-of-the-range, eco-responsible housing development comprising 7 bioclimatic wooden villas scattered across the site. Developed by the developer Ma, this project will open up the villa to the forest and provide its residents with top-quality facilities and living space in an exceptional natural environment.

As an option and as part of this project, the Ciguë architectural practice drew inspiration from the architectural and landscape qualities of the site to devise a sensitive rehabilitation project in continuity with the history of the building. The architects are proposing a return to the original layout of the villa, with the aim of optimising its volumes, and the development of double heights to let in light and magnify the structure. Lightweight wooden terraces overlooking the forest will complete the integration of the property into its green surroundings.
