Modernist house

Located in a sought-after neighborhood, the house offers both tranquility and easy access to local shops, the Cap Ferret market, and the beaches of the basin and ocean.

The architecture is centered around an exposed wooden post-and-beam structure, freeing up space and allowing for expansive openings. The flat roof, with its wide overhangs, provides solar protection while evoking the lightness of Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House, adapted to the Atlantic climate.

The south façade features full-height sliding glass doors, creating a constant dialogue between indoors and outdoors, opening onto a covered terrace that extends the living space. The north façade is adorned with a tall ribbon window, ensuring zenithal lighting. Light, filtered by blinds and reflected by the beams, is treated as a tangible element in its own right.

With a measured approach, Louis Gombeaud seamlessly integrates his architecture into the landscape, respecting the pine forest and emphasizing natural light and elements.

Trained in the spirit of the Modern Movement and a student of Claude Ferret, Louis Gombeaud belongs to a generation of understated architects from the 1960s who shaped the architectural landscape of southwestern France with precision and restraint. Based between Bordeaux and Cap Ferret, his work is guided by clarity of design, natural light, and the intimate relationship between architecture and landscape.

His approach aligns with the humanist modernism of the Bordeaux School (architects Salier, Courtois, Lajus, Sadirac), while asserting a personal, more domestic and meditative voice. Avoiding formal excess, Gombeaud designs homes where every detail—beams, openings, roof overhangs—contributes to a balance of rigor and softness.

Today, his work, exemplified by the house he designed for himself in Cap Ferret, embodies timeless Atlantic modernity—an architecture that is both just and poetic.
