Description

Sixties spirit on the doorstep of Paris

Designed in the mid-1960s by architect Henri Pottier for his own use, this house enjoys an exceptional setting at the heart of a Japanese-inspired landscaped garden.

Nestled within a landscaped garden featuring a pond, ferns, and lush plantings, the house spans 236 m² across two levels that follow the slope of the land.

The ground floor opens onto an entrance hall leading to a suite with access to a terrace, a second shower room, a dressing room, a wine cellar, and a home cinema.

A half-level houses a cathedral-style living room opening onto a terrace.

The living spaces are located on the garden level, arranged in an L-shape. This level includes a 60 m² living-dining room with a suspended stove, an equipped kitchen opening onto the garden, a suite with a bathroom and dressing room that benefits from the lush outdoor atmosphere, two children’s bedrooms, a shower room, and a bathroom.

The exterior spaces consist of a first garden designed in the tradition of Japanese gardens, a second lawn area, and a vegetated flat roof accessible via a spiral staircase.

A garage completes the property.

Just steps from the Meudon Forest and close to Avenue du Château, this house enjoys an exceptional environment in a quiet residential neighborhood, only a 5-minute walk from shops, schools, and cultural venues. It is served by the Transilien N, RER C, and T2 lines, providing access to Paris or La Défense in 25 minutes.

Geometry and light diffusion

The architect makes the most of the site’s constraints, its slope, narrowness, and surrounding buildings, by designing a compact structure with geometric lines, animated by large ribbon windows, curved designs, and variations in levels.

Arranged in half-levels, the spaces communicate with each other through numerous visual openings, lending a sense of lightness to the whole and creating fluid, airy circulation. Light floods the house through a multitude of openings, from ribbon windows to a reinterpreted skylight in the living room.

Living in the landscape

The L-shaped layout and numerous framed openings onto the pond and garden contribute to the house’s integration into its landscaped surroundings. In the spirit of a traditional Japanese garden, where the goal is to create a microcosm of nature in a confined, defined space, the exteriors are perfectly attuned to the architectural design, fostering a harmonious dialogue between interior and exterior.

Henri Pottier

A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in architecture (1937), Henri Pottier (1912-2000) was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1944. After World War II, he contributed to the Reconstruction in Eure and taught at the Beaux-Arts.

In 1959, he partnered with architect Raymond Lopez on the Front-de-Seine development project in Paris, advocating for a modern urban planning approach inspired by the Athens Charter : layered uses and vertical construction to maximize light in residential spaces.

Pottier’s notable works include the new École Polytechnique campus in Palaiseau (1970), the Val-de-Grâce Hospital in Paris (1980), and the Stade Louis-II in Monaco (1981). He was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and an Officer of the National Order of Merit.
