Description

A unique duplex in la Cité Radieuse

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016, La Cité Radieuse in Marseille is a masterpiece by Le Corbusier. Born from the combination of two adjacent Type E duplexes, this apartment offers approximately 200 m² of space on an upper floor. It features a unique layout and exceptional spatial qualities within La Cité Radieuse.

The entrance, equipped with a closet, opens into a vast double-height living area bathed in natural light. This space includes a living room, a dining area, and a library corner. It extends into a “double” loggia of nearly 16 m², designed as an extension of the living area, offering panoramic views of Marseille and its hills.

The adjacent kitchen, renovated in the 1990s, follows the original design and spirit of Charlotte Perriand’s work.

The upper floor, extended by a walkway, houses the sleeping and working areas. It includes an office and a master suite with a bathroom featuring a jacuzzi and separate toilet. This area benefits from abundant natural light thanks to the double-height glass roof of the living area; it can be partitioned off with a solid wooden accordion wall.

Two additional bedrooms complete the sleeping area. Each has its own washbasin and storage. They open onto an 8 m² loggia with exceptional sea views. One of these bedrooms also includes an office.
Two “boat-style” shower cabins and separate toilets complete this level.

Located in Marseille, Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation is situated in the prestigious 8th arrondissement. It is set within a three-hectare park, between hills and the sea. With two levels of amenities, including a shopping gallery with local stores and a hotel, as well as a nursery school, a solarium, a swimming pool, and an open-air theater on the roof, along with permanent security, La Cité Radieuse offers an exceptional quality of life.

An unparalleled experience

With its unmatched double surface area among the 337 apartments in La Cité Radieuse, this duplex stands out for its generous volumes. Its open floor plan and expansive spaces offer great potential for various uses and adaptations (receptions, exhibitions, etc.). Its outdoor areas, totaling nearly 32 m², are also unparalleled.

Unified in 1966 and renovated in the 1990s (including woodwork, kitchen, and Moroccan Tadelakt walls), the apartment has retained most of its original features, such as the staircase designed by Jean Prouvé, built-in storage, and the “boat shower” cabins.

Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, also known as “Le Corbusier”

Born in 1887 in Switzerland and passed away in 1965, Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, was an architect and urban planner renowned for transforming architecture into a total art form. He designed buildings and interiors, focusing on both furniture and comfort, while considering the urban dimensions of his projects. He remains one of the most emblematic figures of the Modern Movement.

Throughout his career, Le Corbusier shared his visions and theories by participating in international exhibitions, such as the 1925 exhibition where he presented the Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau, and the 1937 exhibition with his Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux.

A proponent of modernism and rejecting decorative arts, Le Corbusier embodied his architectural philosophy in his villas, particularly in the Villa Savoye (1928), where he theorized the “Five Points of Modern Architecture” (pilotis, roof terrace, ribbon windows, free façade, and open floor plan).

Although he was one of the most prolific architects of his time, many of his projects, such as the “Voisin” Plan and the Contemporary City for Three Million Inhabitants, were never realized. Sometimes considered too polemical or radical for the public, Le Corbusier’s work nonetheless achieved international resonance. His final major project was in Chandigarh, India, where he oversaw the urban planning for the new capital of Punjab, blending raw concrete with lush vegetation.
