Description
An appartment in one of eastern Paris’s most emblematic architectural landmark
Located on the 14th and top floor, this apartment enjoys a panoramic view of Paris, from the Eiffel Tower to Sacré Cœur. It features two balconies, whose petal-like shape—resembling a cauliflower—has made this complex of ten circular towers, designed by Gérard Grandval in the 1970s, famous.
Fully renovated in 2022, this 61.3 m² apartment has an optimized layout. The entrance leads to a living room and a semi-open kitchen, opening onto one of the two terraces. The large living area has been completely rethought, with a platform designed to create a new dining space. A hallway then leads to two bedrooms, two walk-in closets, large storage spaces, a bathroom, and a separate toilet. The minimalist design features a lacquered white floor and a concrete-effect bathroom, giving the space a contemporary feel.
The living room and both bedrooms have access to the terraces and offer unobstructed views. The apartment includes a private parking space and a cellar, both located at the foot of the building.
The originality of these towers lies in their petal-shaped balconies, arranged in a staggered pattern on the façade of each apartment. The goal was to preserve residents’ privacy and optimize the use of living spaces. The architect initially envisioned greening these balconies, dreaming of a true vertical garden. Though left bare, the balconies still allow residents to enjoy the outdoors.
Les Choux are located around Boulevard Pablo-Picasso, in a neighborhood stretching between Lake Créteil to the south and the courthouse and Université Paris-Est-Créteil to the north. Well connected to public transport, the site is just 30 minutes from central Paris by car or metro, with the Line 8 station only 500 meters from the residence.
The area offers a wide range of shops and local services, including the Créteil Soleil shopping center, daycare centers, and schools.
Les Choux: From postmodern avant-garde to architectural heritage
“The flower is the anti-cube. We must build in a way that is fluid and wild, vegetal and moving. Above all, we must be wary of the functional.”
Gérard Granval
Les Choux de Créteil represent a striking example of 1970s French architecture, seeking formal and programmatic renewal in collective housing. Their organic design breaks with the austerity of the functionalist high-rises of the 1950s Reconstruction era, while retaining bold lines and a Brutalist expression.
In response to the need for densification due to rapid population growth, Les Choux developed a mixed program, combining social housing, student housing, private ownership, and urban planning. The project’s philosophy places residents’ needs at the center, emphasizing light and outdoor spaces.
Public perception of these buildings has evolved significantly since their completion. Initially met with skepticism, they have become Créteil’s most iconic structures over time. Frequently used as film and music video sets, they were renovated in 1998 and 2010 and awarded the “20th Century Heritage” label by the Ministry of Culture in 2008.
