Description

A panoramic apartment in the Labourdette Towers

Just steps away from the Canebière, this apartment is located in the Labourdette Towers, an emblematic project of the reconstruction of downtown Marseille and labeled as 20th Century Heritage since 2006.

The apartment offers a surface area of 87 m² LC on an upper floor with a breathtaking view of Marseille.

The living space includes a large, open-plan living room offering a stunning panorama of the Old Port and Notre-Dame de la Garde. A separate, fully equipped kitchen and a balcony complete the ensemble.

The sleeping area consists of two bedrooms with a bathroom and separate WC. Each bedroom benefits from a south-facing balcony.

The apartment has retained its original layout and features, such as built-in closets in one of the bedrooms and in the hallway.

It also includes a cellar.

The building enjoys a privileged location in the heart of Marseille, in the Belsunce district, 5 minutes from the Old Port and close to all amenities. It is also well-served by public transportation, including the tramway (T2 and T3), buses, and the metro (Noailles and Vieux-Port stops within a 5-minute walk).

“Les Labourdettes,” a symbol of downtown Marseille’s restructuring

After World War II, the unsanitary housing in the Bourse district was demolished, and its residents were expropriated. Following consultations with numerous architects for a project of 500 housing units, it was finally the Boileau and Labourdette agency that took on the task, at the request of the then-mayor, Gaston Defferre.

Completed in 1962, the complex consists of three towers and one bar-shaped building. The initial project included other slightly lower bar-shaped buildings and a commercial gallery, but their construction was canceled after the discovery of the archaeological site of the ancient port of Marseille, known as the “Jardin des Vestiges.”

The reinforced concrete structure of the buildings was developed in collaboration with engineer Jean-Louis Sarf. This post-and-slab structure is punctuated on the facade by a regular grid of hard stone. The buildings, covered with terrace roofs, offer a magnificent view of the sea and the city of Marseille.

Jacques-Henri Labourdette, a Modernist in Marseille

A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in 1942, Jacques-Henri Labourdette (1915-2003) refined his style through various projects in France, influenced by the rigor of classical architecture and the boldness of modern innovations. In 1945, he co-founded an architecture firm with Roger Boileau, which they later developed into a large practice comprising an architecture agency (Suabla) and a technical design office (Sethia). Deeply committed to the modern movement, Labourdette actively contributed to the post-war modernization of the urban and architectural landscape. He designed large housing complexes in the Paris region and, together with Roger Boileau and Edouard Albert, built the first residential tower with a tubular steel frame in Paris. He combined his technical expertise with modern architectural innovations, creating lightweight structures with diverse uses.
