Genius Loci is a programme of immersive exhibitions that brings together architectural heritage and contemporary art. For this latest edition, organised in partnership with the Villa Medici, the Académie de France in Rome, the Genius Loci association is presenting a series of ‘Roman’ works by the multidisciplinary artist Benoît Maire in the Atelier Ozenfant, a manifesto built in 1923 by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret for the painter Amédée Ozenfant.
14th to 22th of October 2023
Conceived as a journey from Rome to Paris, the exhibition offers a reflection on measurement and time, echoing Benoît Maire’s research and the spirit of this remarkable architecture. Throughout the exhibition, the artist’s works interact with the radical purity of the studio.
Commissioned by the painter Amédée Ozenfant from Le Corbusier, the Atelier Ozenfant is one of the first purist buildings by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Delivered in 1923 in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, this studio house is distinguished by its monumental corner glass roof and bears witness to Le Corbusier’s formal experiments with the façade and the free plan. Amédée Ozenfant lived there until 1938, when he left for New York.
Founded by curator and author Marion Vignal, Genius Loci is a programme of immersive exhibitions bringing together architectural heritage and contemporary creation. Previous editions took place at Gio Ponti’s Flying Angel in Garches in 2021 and Auguste Perret’s Apartment in Paris in 2022.
Genius Loci puts the spotlight on confidential treasures of modern architecture, and exceptionally opens up these private places that are usually closed to the public, encouraging their discovery. Each exhibition breaks down the barriers between the arts and builds bridges between past and present, heritage and modernity. In this way, the association defends a unique way of bringing architecture to life through a human and intimate approach, which serves to reveal the profound identity of a work of art.
